Growing up on the “West Side” I never saw leaders who looked or spoke like me. It was not until the year of 2003 that Utah appointed its first female governor, Olene Walker. On that day, my father, an immigrant from the small islands of Tonga told me that I too, could DO and BE anything I wanted to be. Currently only 25% of the Utah state legislature is comprised of women. Of that number, even fewer are women of color. My name is Ofa Matagi and I am running to represent the most racially and ethnically diverse city in Utah, West Valley House District 33. It is time our legislative body more accurately reflects the constituents it serves. More importantly, that we unify our community and government by working together.
